Comparing Web 1.0 to Web 2.0

These are both examples of Web 1.0 sites:

This website is an example of Web 1.0 because this site only provides information to the public, but it does not provide a way for people to interact with each other.

Yogurtland

This website is an example of Web 1.0 because it only offers basic information on its product and how to contact the company, but people cannot interact with other people.

These are both examples of Web 2.0 sites:
This website is an example of a Web 2.0 site because people on this site can interact with each other through community web reviews and ratings. The site uses both AJAX (because the site does not need to load frequently) and XML. The site also uses RSS so people can read about new movie reviews that appear on this site. An interesting thing about this site is that anyone that has a Twitter account already is a part of this website. This is an example of a web mashup since the site interacts with Twitter in order to post movie reviews on its website.

Zoom.it by Live Labs

This website is an example of a Web 2.0 site because it is a site in which a user can create his own type of content (a crisp image in a new angle). This site uses AJAX because it does not need to load frequently and it uses XML because the site is very interactive; it allows you to drag and zoom into images. It is an example of cloud computing since this could be a type of program, but instead, it is a web application that is used to improve pictures. Another convenient thing this site does is after editing your picture the way you would like, the site gives you a nice shortened URL so it can be shared with friends.

New Media

  • Come up with 3 similarities and 3 differences between traditional and new media.
    • Some similarities between these type of media is that they both communicate some type of message, they both involve using a person's senses (seeing and hearing), and they can both be communicated through a variety of sources (print, machines, etc...). Three differences between these type of media is that traditional is not as interactive as new media is, new media involves the use of sources like the internet and SMS while traditional doesn't, and new media is in a way, easier for people to reach since it is always readily available on the internet.
  • List 4 examples of traditional media and 4 examples of “New Media.”
    • Four examples of traditional media are, posters found on the street, stickers pasted on poles, the news on the television, and the radio. Four examples of new media are the internet, flyers that include a link to a website, television shows that allow users to use SMS to interact with the show, and modern video-game systems.
  • Why is the term “New Media” problematic?
    • The term "New Media" can be problematic because it is such a broad term that can be actually be applied to anything if one argues with it, and many types of media that can be "new" right now, will become traditional even though a lot of time may not pass.
  • Come up with an alternate name for “New” Media.
    • Another name that could be used could be "Interactive Global Media".
